Have you heard Roseanne is back? This past December when I was in Los Angeles for Star Wars, our group was also able to enjoy a top secret set visit to Roseanne! I am so thrilled to finally share! We were able to walk on the set and meet several of the cast members.
The iconic comedy is returning to The ABC Television Network TONIGHT at 8pm. In celebration of the series premiere, I excited to finally be able to share photos and highlights from that interview. Enjoy taking a picture walk through the set with me.
Here I am with all the chill I could muster. It wasn’t very much. And who can blame me? I’m standing in the time warp that is the Conner’s living room. That plaid couch! That variegated carpet! Those old photos that they pan over during the credits! That crocheted afghan?!
You guys, it felt like I found a time machine. I love how committed Mrs. Conner is to the style choices she made in the 80s.
The set visit was part of The Last Jedi Event, which was incredible. I know that I am in minority here, but I was more excited about a Roseanne set visit than Star Wars. Call me crazy, but Roseanne had more of an impact on me than Star Wars did. I remember the show Roseanne well. In the 80s and 90s it was one of my favorite TV shows. It was so different from so many shows that were on the air, but familiar in so many ways. I think America is ready to see what the Conner family has been up to since Becky, Darlene, and DJ have grown up.
There are nine brand new episodes featuring the complete original cast. Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Micheal Fishman, and Lecy Goranson are all back! Even Sarah Chalke who played Becky in later seasons will make an appearance as a new character named “Andrea”. Because the kids have grown up, the cast has expanded with spouses and children added to the mix! Get ready for the Conner family to tackle today’s issues with just as much heart and as many laughs as two decades ago.
You heard right, and your eyes do not deceive you, Dan LIVES! I don’t know how this works out, I cried through the finale all those years ago too. In any event, America is getting a little break in bad news and Dan is alive!
Sara Gilbert is back, this time as the producer. I am a huge fan of her work. Dear 12 year old Kate : Check it.
Fun fact : Darlene was my favorite. I remember being compared to her from time to time, which I have decided to internalize as a compliment. Darlene was as sassy as they come, she was also the smartest. Winner on both counts in my book.
We also met Lecy Goranson, AKA “First Becky”. She has been out of the spotlight for a while now. I am excited to see her return to TV. Sarah Chalke with also be on the show, you will have to watch to see what role “Second Becky” plays in this Roseanne Reboot.
OK, who is ready to feel old? Brace yourselves. Little DJ Conner is a legit grown up and I can’t handle it. Michael Fishman is back as DJ. On the show and in real life he has children of his own.
The most legendary moment was when the queen, Roseanne Barr herself, came onto the set for a quick photo opp. While her reputation may be a little rough around the edges, she was nothing but kind to our group.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Sara, Lecy, and Micheal to talk about what being a part of this project means to them.
Executive Producer Sara Gilbert started. “We’ve shot seven episodes. We’ve got two more to go. In terms of story-lines, it’s 20 years later, but we’re kinda picking up where we and our head writers basically thought our characters were.”
When asked about how the last season works into this story, they didn’t exactly say how, but Sara confirmed “Well, Dan is alive.” *cheers by all in the interview*
Michael Fishman added, “The main crux of the show remains intact. I think we’ve done a good job of kind of acknowledging kind of where we went towards the end of the show but within context.” He ensured us that “It’ll all make sense for fans. I think it’s a really quick kind of recap in the first episode. I think the writers did a really good job of kind of explaining where we are now and how it kind of fits in the transition.”
Most fans of the show know there were two actresses that played Becky. Lecy Goranson was the original Becky and she is back. When asked what it was like to return to the Roseanne set after 20 years she shared the following, “It really feels like a family. It feels like going home. I’m from outside of Chicago, and it’s like when you walk in your front door and you think, oh, yeah, this is that feeling. That’s how I felt here especially when I see these faces and I hear Roseanne’s voice piercing through the set. You know, it really feels that way.” She added; “And, you know, sometimes I’m driving to work and I think there’s like this kind of ‘90s revival going on in general. I’m listening to a grunge song or something like that. And then I’ll show up to work and I’ll think like “What? Am I stuck in some time warp?”.
A blogger asked “Why did you feel that now was the right time to do it, and then what do you want this new generation that never saw the original show to walk away with?”
Sara’s response was perfect and left me with some hope. ”
“I think in one respect it was an incredible time to do it, because I felt like our country is so divided. I feel like this is a working class family that can have varying political views even within the family but still love each other. And I thought what a great way to try to help unite people, have people listen to each other. I strongly believe that we can disagree without being so divided. So, I’m hoping that we can help in that way.
And then it was also just a matter of synchronicity. I think none of us really thought that everybody would be onboard. And when I heard John say that he would do it, then it just motivated me to see if everyone would do it. So, it is sort of this wonderful time in our country to do it, but that just was a lucky byproduct of the fact that we all wanted to do it at this moment.”
In twenty years the character’s lives have changed quite a bit; especially the kids. Becky is a mother and a new widow. Darlene is a single mother of two kids. “What the H, David?” Me. DJ is a recently out of the military, married to someone who is active duty and he is also a dad.
Michael shared, “I think one thing that Sara’s done really well in that is embody the way that parents prioritize and take certain jobs or positions that they don’t always envision or want to. I think we all as parents know that there are times when you end up doing things that you didn’t imagine that you would end up, but you’re making the best of a situation, which I think most of the country will really respond to.”
Roseanne is for sure to be a welcome return for those who grew up watching it and will capture the hearts of this next generation too!
A huge thank you to Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman for taking the time to speak with us. It was such a thrill to walk through the set and hear your insights. I can’t wait to see Roseanne on air again!
