The new film “Safety”  is inspired by a true story premieres on Disney Plus on December 11th. Our entire family enjoyed a special sneak peek of this film. This is a perfect movie to kick off  your weekend with your family. “Safety” is based on a true story and shares a message we all need to hear, especially now. Safety reminds us that family comes in a lot of different packages.  This film reminds us that it isn’t all about us and that it often takes a village.  I love a movie about a community coming together and second chances.  If you want to fill your holiday movie queue with feel good stories, add Safety to the top of the list!

“SAFETY is a drama inspired by the empowering story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey (Jay Reeves), a young man facing a series of challenging circumstances, whose dedication and persistence help him to triumph over repeated adversities. Aided by his teammates and the Clemson community, he succeeds on the field while simultaneously raising and caring for his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr (Thaddeus J. Mixson).” Disney Plus

Trigger Warnings for Safety on Disney+

As a mother through adoption, I am always on guard for trauma and triggers.  If you or your child is on a path to healing, you should know some common triggers are in this film.  Those who have struggled with or grown up with insecurities because of drug addiction should be warned that this may drum up some sad memories.  Our friends that have grown up in foster care should know that the main characters do grow up in an unsafe household and the youngest child is put in foster care before his older brother takes on the challenge of hiding him in his college dorm. Scenes are not graphic, but it is important to note that violence, drugs, and food insecurities are all featured.  Without spoiling, this ‘based on a true story’ film also has a very happy ending; which I sadly know is another possible trigger for children still living in limbo with a parent or foster care.  Safety is a beautiful movie, but for some it is just important to point out the premise. Depending on where your child is on their road to healing or where their family member may be on a road to healing, it is certainly worth pre screening first.
