Halloween is on our doorstep, which means we are ready with fun, family costumes again. As crazy as it might be, our costumes this year are probably my favorite of all time! I’m just gonna call it; Halloween 2017 is the year of Schitt’s Creek costumes. Schitt’s Creek is our new favorite show and we just think these characters are perfect for Halloween! So like any respectable parents would…. we dressed our kids up too. They are such good sports.
If you are not watching Schitt’s Creek yet, you really need to be. Schitt’s Creek is a show about the filthy-rich Rose family who suddenly finds themselves broke. They are forced to leave their fancy, pampered lives and downsize. They choose to rebuild in Schitt’s Creek, a town that they purchased years ago as a joke. We discovered it on Netflix just a few months ago and we were sold from the start. The all star cast includes Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara; so these nerds were all like “Why did it take us so long to discover this show?!”
We couldn’t wait to get our costumes together. The only problem we ran into is it appears that the show still isn’t exactly universally known. I assumed everyone was watching it and we were late to the party, but my control group taught me differently. It still amused us, and I hope those who are as enthusiastic about the show find joy in these photos, even if we are a rare birds. I’m pretty confident this quirky show is minutes from being a household name, and we are super cutting edge.
As obscure as it might be, I am here to tell you that Schitt’s Creek is one of the best “make your own” Halloween Costumes. For Johnny, Moira, Alexis, and David Rose; a black and white color palette is really best. A simple suit, white dress shirt, pocket square, and brown shoes is all that is needed for Johnny’s wardrobe. Moira Rose loves high collared shirts, long sleeves, lots of jewelry, and always has her signature red lipstick. Alexis is the trendiest of the bunch with cute dresses and accessories. David is almost always in an eccentric black and white sweater. Admittedly, these costumes may not work on their own, Schitt’s Creek is the perfect group costume.
While the Rose family is a family of four, we are a family of five so we had to find another character for our littlest to play. There are plenty of characters, but it was no question that Stevie was the best fit. Stevie has a good heart, but goes through life silently mildly annoyed with all the people around her.
We love to dress up, but this year we upped our game a bit. We worked with our new friend, and local San Diego Photographer Christel Tran because we knew this was such a fun idea! We love to partner with local photographers from time to time and this is one of my favorite photo sessions to date!
Moira and Johnny are kind of the perfect couple for us to play. They are so quirky and weird, but so lovable. This year we thought it would be fun to play an older couple; lean in rather than shy away from our wrinkles. We died laughing when we saw the photos.
Alexis and David are grown ups, but just barely. Our tweens did an excellent job of portraying them. This isn’t a show our kids have seen; but we shared a couple clips and they had the rolls down pat.
“Just act like you can’t even.”
We love Stevie as much as any other character on the show. We joke that our littlest would be best friends with her if we lived near one another. They make the same “this is ridiculous” face. A “Stevie” costume is super easy. White tank top, plaid button down, jeans, converse, and a name tag just in case.
Once again, a HUGE thank you to Christel Tran. Here is a quote from her website, which I hope you will take a peek at, her portfolio is beautiful ….
“I’m Christel, a proud wife and mama of 3. I am a natural light, San Diego-based photographer who loves spending time with family & friends, going to the beach, and iced mochas. I picked up my first SLR (before digital cameras were even around!) back in college and haven’t put a camera down ever since. I was hooked! After much encouragement, I decided to turn this special hobby and passion of mine into a business. Thank you for stopping by and checking out my work! I hope to have the opportunity to capture some special moments of you and yours. “Taking an image, freezing a moment, reveals how rich reality truly is.” -Ansel Adams”
If you are in the San Diego area, we would highly recommend checking out Christel Tran Photography for your next portrait session! Thank you Christel, for partnering with us on this fun project!
