Tips for a Healthy New Year!

Happy 2016!  I say it every year but I cannot believe how fast 2015 flew by!  The first month of the New Year is a great time to reflect on they past year and what we can do to make the future brighter.  Our family’s New Years Resolution is almost always the same – to find ways to get healthier!  If you are looking for the best ways to stay healthy in the New Year I have some great tips!  I hope this is an encouragement for 2016 to be the best year yet.  While I fully believe we need to accept ourselves and love ourselves at any stage of health, we can also make changes to be healthier going forward.  Choosing a healthy lifestyle says that you not only love yourself, but that you also love those around you.  So who is with me?

Eat Whole Foods – don’t focus on a ‘diet’, just focus on eating healthy, whole foods in 2016.  Eat tons of fresh fruits and veggies.  We grow fruits and veggies and we also buy our favorites when they are in season.  Look at labels and choose meal items and snack items that are lower in processing.  Nuts, seaweed strips, raisins, whole fruits, or baby carrots are a much better snack option than a box of crackers.  Meat and dairy are certainly in our family’s diet but we are making steps towards a more vegan and gluten free home base.  We typically make two or three vegetarian or vegan meals per week and almost all meals are gluten free.  We hope to incorporate more plant based recipes in our rotation and I encourage you to try it too!  Plant based meals are great for your health and your wallet!

Drink more water – ditch the soda, alcohol, coffee, and energy drinks! OK, so maybe you don’t ditch them entirely, but what if you just cut down and replace it with good old fashioned water?  Studies show that drinking more water improves many ailments as well as helping keep weight down. Start each day with a glass of water, even if you want to stick with coffee (I still have coffee or tea almost every day!), drink a full glass of water first.

Go to bed early – I have vowed to turn the computer off no later than 10 pm every single night of 2016.  Because I work out of the house, as many people do I sometimes get stuck working (or simply playing on non work related social media) until 10 or 11 pm.  When that happened I wouldn’t get to sleep until after midnight!  Our goals are to sleep a solid 8 hours a night every single night.  Sleep is also associated with good health, weight control, and better moods.

Exercise more – I am the first to admit I have fallen off the exercise wagon.  While we were still eating healthy I was barely working out – once a week, maybe twice and that just isn’t enough.  While I dare not dictate what kind of exercise you do I highly suggest talking with your doctor about what you can do safely.  While a gym membership might not be in your budget there are many ways to work out from home with no equipment at all.  I actually asked for a mini session with a personal trainer and nutritionist as my birthday and Christmas gift from my husband.  I start next week….. I will keep you posted on my progress!

Make sure to get an annual physical check up – Checking in with your doctor once a year is so important and so many people skip this step!  Our whole family makes a yearly trip to the doctor to get all checked out.  If a problem arises it is always best to catch it early.  This is also a great time to have a healthcare professional check all your vital signs and encourage you to be as healthy as possible. They will likely talk with you about some of the points we discussed above, but also about medications, supplements, and products that can help you stay healthy in the new year.

  2. I am drinking more water and less soda this year! I realized what I like most about soda is the carbonation and not necessarily the taste. I got a soda stream for Christmas and it’s great because I an carbonate my own water!

      oh! so smart!! I get the carbonated water from Trader Joes with the essence of lime / lemon – those hold me over – Soda was my weakness until about 2 years ago – now I can hardly stand the taste – so weird!

      me too! that is the hardest one for me – BUT – I went to bed at 930 pm last night and I have been in such a good mood today! LOL
