 Billie Holiday is an excellent choice of study for Women’s History month, or the history of music in America. The music we listen to today, was influenced by the Jazz and Swing songs of Billie Holiday in the 1940s. She is an incredible person for children to study as they learn about America.

Billie Holiday Facts

Billie Holiday was born “Eleanora Fagan” in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born on April 7, 1915. Billie Holiday was born to an unwed teen coupl, Sadie Fagan and Clarance Halliday. Billie’s father left her family to pursue a career in Jazz.

Billie grew up in Baltimore Maryland and experienced extreme poverty. Billie endured a difficult childhood that included school for juvenile delinquency and even dropped out of school at 11 years old. Billie was made to work very early and says she never had time to play as a child.
